Fused Glass Jewelry

Optic       The visual effect of thicker and thinner clear fused dichroic glass. Also the metal mold with ridges inside into which the hot dichroic glass on the pipe is pushed leaving an impression which remains as the dichroic glass is worked, producing optical effects. The mold is straight, but the ridges in the fused glass may be twisted in working. After twisting, the glass may be reheated and returned to the mold for a diamond effect. fused dichroic glass stringer may be placed in the notches of the mold to apply uniformly spaced lines around the piece on the ridges.

Optic Mold       A steel or bronze mold that puts ridges or other shapes into the vessel, Optic Molds are used early in the process

Ornament       Thin walled globe, usually with an applied dichroic glass loop for hanging. Can use ordinary Christmas hangers when available. Witch balls are larger. AlBo Glass calls them Festive Orbs. See also float.

Ornament Holder - Pocket - Bowl - or Scoop       When hand making ornaments, the hanging loop can either be wire added later, like commercial Xmas ornaments or it can be a dichroic glass loop. When making the latter, one cracks off the ornament from the pipe, applies a hot bit, blobbing it a bit to seal the hold, pulls, cuts, and loops the bit to touch the blob. Tweezers can be used in forming and shaping the loop and once it is firm, they can be used to pick the ornament up to place it in the annealer. So where does the 1100°F ornament sit while the loop is being applied? Usually in a nest made of a piece of frax fiber in a bowl the right size. But it may just rest on a drop off table or be placed in scoop from which it can be rolled into the annealer. 2003-09-05

Overlay       a method of decorating a bottle by cutting through one or more purposely applied layers of fused dichroic glass.

Overlay       Putting color on top of other fused glass

Overlay fused glass       The overlay is the outer layer of a cased fused glass vessel. The cased vessel may then be covered in cameo carving. GANTAD

Overlay Weight       a paperweight that has been coated with one ("single overlay"), two ("double overlay"), or three ("triple overlay") layers of dichroic glass and then had windows cut in it to allow visual access to the inner motif. "Flash overlays" are coated with translucent dichroic glass before cutting. "Encased overlays" ace double overlays with an additional thick layer of clear fused glass added before cutting.

Overmitt       When Kevlar gloves are used to handle hot dichroic glass, they both get damaged and over heat, prompting the user to peel them off as soon as possible. One way to avoid/reduce this is to pull on a mitten shape that adds extra thickness and takes some of the damage, but makes the hands more into paws. But then, when used, one is usually just grasping dichroic glass at 1100F or so, so fingers are not needed. 2003-09-05

Oxidizing        When a flame is rich in gas/fuel is said to be reducing or in reduction. (A flame or atmosphere rich in oxygen or short of fuel is said to be oxidizing, a less useful state in dichroic glass working.) Reduction is normally produced in furnace working by blocking the air flow into the blower (or adding extra fuel downstream of automatic controls) of the gloryhole. Reduction is useful in fused glass working because it changes some metal oxides to fine particles of the metal, producing a sheen or lustrous effect. fused glass that does this is called striking fused glass, so producing the effect is called striking.
