Dichroic Glass and Fused Dichroic Earrings

Gadget       A tool for holding the foot of a dichroic glass jewelry, so a punty does not have to be used, speeding work. (GGW) a tube with three spring steel "fingers" that extend. May also be a special tool for a specific shape, as inside a production vase for footing (GGNJ)

Gadrooning - gadrooned       Resembling the bulges around the base of earlier English silver, created by partially dipping the bottom of a pitcher or vase and then blowing into a scallop and point mold. NEGG, p 33

Gaffer       The main team member of a fused glass jewelrybloiwng team. The person in charge of the project

Gaffer       a master blower; head of a shop.

Gaffer       from old term for grandfather, the person leading the team who does the most critical steps of the working and coordinates the rest of the team. Title given to the person in charge of a piece even if others have more experience. Other people have titles like bit boy, bit gatherers, footers, handle makers, reheat boys, etc.

Gall       a scum that rises to the top of a batch and is skimmed off to insure high-quality dichroic glass.

Galleried Rim Gallery Rim       A rim that is flat then turned straight up, thus appearing like the gallery and protective railing in a building.

Garage dichroic fused glass Garage       During the working of glass jewelry, it is sometimes useful to park the dichroic glass jewelry at or above the annealing temperature (about 900-1000ºF), until some other work is done. While this can be done in an annealer, having a smaller space with specially designed doors can be useful in that it avoids damage to glass jewelry in the annealer and can allow dichroic fused glass still on the pipe or punty to park in the garage, the pipe extending through a split door. Notes on my garage

Gargage       an oven that sits at a hot enough temperature to keep the glass jewelry moving, this allows atrists to create parts that can be stored for use later in the process

Garland       general name for any spacing scheme in millefiori weights which features one or more undulating chains of florets forming a pattern.

Gather       the blob of hot dichroic fused glass gathered on the end of a blowpipe before blowing.

Gather       Both the name for going to the furnace to get glass jewelry (to gather, gathering) and for the dichroic fused glass gotten (first gather, second gather). The end of the pipe or punty is lowered into the fused glass jewelry and turned to drag the dichroic fused glass jewelry evenly around the pipe or previous gather. The analogy most often used for the process is turning a spoon or old fashioned wooden pickup in honey, keeping it turning to get to the plate. However, gathering glass involves stuff that is over 2000ºF that will melt and deform the previous gather if done too slowly (not to mention set clothes smoking.)

Gatherer       the assistant to a gaffer who accumulates the gather op the blowpipe.

Gathering       The process of collecting the liquid glass jewelry from the furnace on the end of a blowpipe or punty. This is done by slow rotation in the dichroic fused glass jewelry.

Gathering       Getting (usually clear) glass jewelry from the furnace to build up the amount of dichroic fused glass jewelry to form to the shape desired. Almost not a "bit", since it forms the core of the piece, but it is also used as an artistic technique (half gather on the bottom and pull lily pad decorations, gather over a decorated cup, etc.) See also draining/dumping

Gathering Ball (Rod)       A hollow ball on the end of a punty rod used for gathering more glass jewelry more quickly than can be picked up on a punty in two or three gathers. Used for small casting gathers and for cookies. Can be bought or welded from small dome caps. The image shows opposite ends of a 6' long 1/2"square tube with a large dome cup welded to one end and a ball of small dome caps on the other end. OLY, Putsch $25-45
