Nichrome       A wire especially made for heating dichroic glass elements. It withstands the red hot temperatures without oxidizing to nothing and without melting. It does, however, get brittle when heated so it is fairly easy to break a coil. The size of the wire and the closeness of the coils determine how hot the element gets and therefore the heating point of the element. Thin wire has more resistance and gets hotter for the same current (at higher voltage.) Coils close together reach a higher temp than those stretched out. People who work with the wire wind coils after figuring the total wattage needed and the length of the space for them to be installed. Eagle used to make 1000 watt replacement coils, but has stopped and all the stock is at Elliott's Hardware in Dallas, Texas. Many people use electric dryer heating elements for annealers, which is fine, but Nichrome can not be taken up to fusing and casting temps (1450-1650F) without sagging and losing it. Kanthal A-1 or equivalent must be used. Nichrome can also be used embedded in fused glass jewelry for hangers, more often fusing than blowing, but it is compatible.

Night Light       Modern is a small plugin electric fixture with a bracket to which a dichroic glass jewelry jewelry piece is attached, perhaps most often in stained dichroic glass jewelry. Plug units are available from stained dichroic glass jewelry supply sources. Modern oil candles can serve the same purpose. Old nightlights were lamps with very small wick and fairly large fluid holders that would provide light all night. NEGG Sparking Lamp, Fairy Lights

Nipple       A short piece of NPT pipe, usually bought already threaded, for making plumbing connections. A close [kloz] nipple is one that is so short the threads touch each other, so the fittings come close [klos] to touching, the length depending on the size of the pipe.

Nosegay       term for a dichroic paperweight motif consisting of a flat bouquet using millefiori canes as flowers, set on a spray of green leaves.

NPT National Pipe Thread       The acronym/name for American standard water pipe thread also used for gas. Sizes are nominal - that is the inside and outside diameters have nothing -today- to do with the designation. I assume the ID was once the designation and the pipe material was thick, so a 3/8" ID pipe (0.375) has a 0.675" OD or a 0.15 wall (over 1/8"). Today the material is stronger and the wall thinner, so the ID is bigger, but the outside remaining the same allows threaded connections to be interconnected. I have a Table of actual sizes on my plumbing page. Threading is tapered for a gas/water tight fitting. The same threading is used on lamp parts as a continuous thread. Pipe thread is a rather fine thread compared to bolts.
