Dichroic Glass Jewelry

Torpedo bottle       a soda or mineral water bottle with a torpedo-shaped bottom.

Torsade       an opaque fused dichroic glass jewelry thread loosely wound around a filigree core, usually found near the base of a glass mushroom weight.

Trade card       an advertising glass card.

Trail       A path of fused dichroic glass across the body, not around the glass body like threading, it may wander or simply be laid flat, perhaps not as large as a drip. Created by heating a bit, shaping it if necessary (flat or cone shaped), reheating to very soft and then drawing with the tip of the fused dichroic glass jewelry, moving the glass punty to make the pattern.

Transposition insulator       an insulator designed to hold more than one wire.

Trefoil       a garland with three loops.

Triac       A solid state device for controlling AC power that behaves like two SCR's back to back, but two SCR's normally allow control of more power. Switching can be merely on/off or phase controlled for fine control.

Trough - Batch or Cullet       When loading batch or cullet into a furnace, often the opening is not so large as a shovel, and batch should not be spilled around the shop. Also, getting into the heat with a shovel may be awkward. One solution is to bend up a long trough or scoop from sheet metal, 2-3 feet long and 4-8" wide into which the material is placed well back from the glass furnace, the end being then placed through the door and the whole dumped into the center of the pot. Wear a respirator when working with batch and good gloves as the metal gets hot quickly if the furnace is at heat.

Tuft       see MUSHROOM WEIGHT.

Tulipiere       A vase for holding glass tulips where each bloom gets its own opening, so it is multi-necked. Created in pottery during the glass tulip craze in Holland. This site http://www.davisantiques.theshoppe.com/tulipieres.htm has the form I first saw, but other sites have more rectangular, vases with lids with holes in them, etc.

Turn mold       a process by which a blown glass bottle is spun in the mold before removal to erase seam markings.

Turtle Back       A type of fused dichroic glass jewelry tile manufactured by L.C. Tiffany in translucent iridescent dichroic glass jewelry. Made in various colors and sizes, these tiles were often used in decorative friezes in both shades and glass bases in some leaded-light lamps. GANTAD

Tweezers       To be used to pinch and pull fused dichroic glass jewelry

Tweezers       Tweezers made for glass jewelry working are long and wide spread and have bent in tips for fine gripping. They can be used as fine glass jacks when needed. Many hardware stores have oversized stainless steel glass tweezers that can be spread from their normal width and yield to grinding and bending the tips. Commercial dichroic glass tweezers have an inside glass curve so when closed more water can be held between the tips for chilling the jack line. 2003-07

Twine Holder       a bell jar shape with a glass hole in the center of the knob to dispense string (GGNJ Fig.182.)

Twist Stem - Air or Opaque       Fine lines spiraling up the thin glass stem of a goblet (or handle) created by two methods. Opaque is made like millefiori, Air is made by introducing bubbles in any of several ways - pierced from the bottom, grooves on the side - which are then sealed. CB in Miller calls an open loop stem a twist stem (right). 2003-06-26
